Why this happens

Bupropion is known to lower the 'seizure threshold', making seizures more likely. Magnesium plays a critical role in nerve and muscle function; significant imbalances in magnesium levels can also trigger seizures. Furthermore, magnesium supplements can sometimes alter the acidity of the stomach or bind to other medications, potentially changing how much bupropion enters the bloodstream.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining these. If you are prescribed magnesium for a deficiency, it is important to take it, but your doctor should monitor your levels closely. If you are taking magnesium as an over-the-counter supplement or antacid, space the doses at least 2 hours apart from your bupropion. Seek immediate medical help if you experience a seizure, severe dizziness, or confusion.
