Real-world evaluation of the GALEAS™ Bladder biomarker for bladder cancer detection

Blood in your urine is a common symptom that needs checking, but most people who have it do not have bladder cancer. At present, hospital doctors usually check inside the bladder using a thin camera test called a cystoscopy. While effective, this can feel uncomfortable and requires an outpatient hospital visit. This study is looking at a new test called GALEAS Bladder across seven NHS hospitals. The test checks urine for tiny genetic signals linked to bladder cancer. People taking part collect a urine sample at home using a special kit before going to their planned hospital appointment. Everyone still receives their routine NHS camera test and care as normal. Taking part does not involve any extra hospital visits or treatments. Researchers hope this test may one day provide a simpler, quicker way to check for bladder cancer and reduce the need for camera tests.

यह अध्ययन किस बारे में है?

Each year in the UK, thousands of people notice blood in their urine, or a doctor finds it during a routine health check. Blood in the urine can sometimes be an early warning sign of bladder cancer, so it is always investigated quickly. However, in the vast majority of cases, it turns out to be caused by something far less serious, like a minor infection or kidney stones.

Currently, the standard way doctors check the bladder is with a flexible cystoscopy. During this test, a specialist passes a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the bladder. While this test gives doctors clear answers, it can be uncomfortable, cause worry, and takes up hospital resources. Finding simpler ways to investigate symptoms could help both patients and the NHS.

This study is testing a new urine check called the GALEAS Bladder test. It searches for tiny genetic markers in urine that are linked to bladder cancer. By comparing the results of this urine test with standard camera tests, researchers want to find out how accurate the new test is in everyday clinical practice.

If the test proves reliable, it could pave the way for a gentler approach to diagnosing bladder cancer in the future. In time, a simple urine test done at home might help doctors quickly spot who needs further hospital tests and who can safely be spared an invasive camera examination.

मुख्य निष्कर्ष

  • Evaluates a new urine test called GALEAS Bladder to see how well it spots signs of bladder cancer.
  • Open to adults referred to NHS hospital clinics because of blood in their urine.
  • Involves collecting a single urine sample at home using a provided kit before your appointment.
  • Does not replace your routine hospital camera test or change your standard NHS care.
  • Requires no extra hospital visits, no new medications, and carries no extra physical risks.

कौन पात्र हो सकता है?

This study is open to adults aged 18 and over who have been referred to an NHS urology clinic to investigate blood in their urine. The blood might be visible when you go to the toilet, or it may have been picked up during a urine test at your GP surgery.

To be eligible, you must be able to collect a urine sample at home and be willing to attend your regular NHS hospital appointments, including the planned camera test (cystoscopy).

People who have previously been diagnosed with bladder cancer (or urothelial cancer) cannot take part. You also cannot join if you are unable to provide a urine sample or choose not to have the standard hospital investigations.

  1. I am aged 18 or older.
  2. I have been referred to an NHS urology team because of blood in my urine.
  3. I have never been diagnosed with bladder cancer in the past.
  4. I am able and willing to collect a urine sample at home.

भागीदारी में क्या शामिल है?

Taking part is designed to fit around your normal care without causing disruption. You will be given a special collection kit to take a urine sample at home before your hospital appointment. The container has a special preservative to keep the sample fresh while it is sent to a specialist laboratory in Birmingham. You will then attend your routine NHS hospital clinic as planned to have your standard investigations, including the flexible camera test. There are no extra medications, no changes to your treatments, and no additional hospital trips. The study simply compares your urine test result with your routine NHS hospital results, and your involvement ends once these tests are complete.

संभावित जोखिम और लाभ

There are no extra physical risks involved in joining this study. Providing a urine sample at home is completely safe and painless, and your standard NHS care and treatment will go ahead exactly as normal. You will not get direct medical benefit from taking part, because the experimental urine result is not being used to guide your personal treatment at this stage. However, your involvement could help doctors develop quicker, less invasive tests for patients in the future. Joining is entirely your choice, and you are free to withdraw at any time without your medical care being affected.

सामान्य प्रश्न

Will I still have my camera test (cystoscopy)?

Yes. You will have all of your standard NHS investigations, including your camera test, exactly as you would if you were not in the study.

Will this urine test tell me if I have cancer?

No. The urine test is being used for research purposes only. Your doctors will rely entirely on your routine NHS hospital tests to make your diagnosis.

Does collecting the urine sample hurt?

Not at all. You simply collect your pee at home into a special container provided to you.

Do I have to attend any extra hospital visits?

No. Taking part does not require any additional hospital appointments beyond the ones already arranged for your standard care.

What happens if I change my mind about taking part?

You can leave the study at any point. Your decision will not change or delay the standard care or treatment you receive from the NHS.
