Can I take Aspirin and Ramipril together?

Why this happens

Ramipril works by relaxing blood vessels through a chemical process in the body. Aspirin (especially at higher doses) can block the production of substances called prostaglandins, which help ramipril work and also help protect the kidneys. When these are blocked, blood pressure may rise slightly and the kidneys may have to work harder.

If you are taking low-dose aspirin (75mg to 150mg) for heart protection, it is usually fine to take with ramipril, but your doctor should still monitor your blood pressure and kidney function. Avoid taking high-dose aspirin (for pain or fever) regularly without speaking to your doctor. Ensure you stay well-hydrated and report any signs of swelling in your ankles or changes in how often you urinate.

Asthma

Do not take aspirin if you have a history of asthma triggered by aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as it can cause a life-threatening asthma attack.

You must not take ramipril if you are pregnant. It can cause serious injury or death to an unborn baby, particularly if taken during the second and third trimesters.

Angioedema (Swelling) - ramipril

Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. This is a rare but serious allergic reaction called angioedema that can block your airway.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking aspirin can increase the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding. It is best to limit alcohol intake or avoid it if you have a history of stomach issues.

Salt substitutes (Potassium-enriched)

Ramipril can increase the levels of potassium in your blood. Using salt substitutes that contain potassium (such as Lo-Salt) can cause your potassium levels to become dangerously high. Check the labels of any 'low-sodium' products.
