Can I take Clopidogrel and Gabapentin together?

Why this happens

Clopidogrel and gabapentin are processed by the body using different pathways. Clopidogrel is activated by liver enzymes (specifically CYP2C19), while gabapentin is not processed by the liver at all and is removed from the body unchanged by the kidneys. Because they do not compete for the same 'machinery' in the body, they do not interfere with each other's effectiveness or safety.

You can continue to take both medicines as prescribed by your doctor. However, always inform your healthcare provider if you start any new supplements or herbal remedies, or if you notice any unusual bruising or bleeding while taking clopidogrel.

Surgery or dental work

You must tell any surgeon, anaesthetist, or dentist that you are taking clopidogrel. You may need to stop taking it 7 days before any planned procedure to prevent excessive bleeding.

Stomach ulcers or bleeding disorders

Do not take clopidogrel if you have an active stomach ulcer or any condition causing active bleeding. Seek urgent medical help if you notice signs of internal bleeding, such as black, tarry stools or vomiting blood.

Severe respiratory depression

Gabapentin can cause serious breathing problems, especially if you already have lung disease or if you take it with other medicines that cause sleepiness or slow breathing (like opioids).

Suicidal ideation

A small number of people taking gabapentin have experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviours; you must seek immediate medical help if you notice any sudden changes in your mood, thoughts, or feelings.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking clopidogrel can increase the risk of bleeding in your stomach and intestines. Drinking alcohol while taking gabapentin can increase the risk of side effects, such as extreme sleepiness, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol.
