There are no known harmful interactions between maitake and turkey tail mushrooms. Both are medicinal fungi that are often taken together to support the immune system. However, because both can stimulate the immune system, there is a theoretical possibility of an additive effect.
Why this happens
Both maitake (Grifola frondosa) and turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) contain complex sugars called beta-glucans. These compounds work in a similar way by activating certain immune cells (like natural killer cells and macrophages). Taking them together may increase this immune-stimulating effect.
What you should do
It is generally considered safe to take these two supplements together. However, if you have an autoimmune condition (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) or are taking immunosuppressant medication, you should consult your doctor before combining them, as they may interfere with your treatment. Always start with the recommended dose on the product packaging.
Important precautions
Bleeding disorders or surgery
These supplements may slow blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding. You must stop taking these at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. Use with caution if you are taking blood-thinning medications like warfarin or aspirin.
Diabetes
These supplements can lower blood sugar levels. If you are taking insulin or other diabetes medications, monitor your blood sugar closely as your dose may need adjustment to prevent hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar).
Low blood pressure (Hypotension)
These supplements may lower blood pressure. If you already have low blood pressure or take medication to control high blood pressure, they could cause your blood pressure to drop too low.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking medicinal mushrooms. Both alcohol and certain compounds in these mushrooms are processed by the liver; combining them may increase the strain on your liver or alter how the supplements are metabolised.

Taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and insulin together significantly increases your risk of having a 'hypo' (hypoglycaemia), which is when your blood sugar levels drop too low. Symptoms of a hypo can include feeling shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused. In severe cases, it can be dangerous.
