Can I take Prozac and Sedoxil together?

Why this happens

Both medicines work by slowing down activity in the central nervous system (the brain). Prozac can also slow down the way your liver processes Sedoxil, which means the Sedoxil stays in your body longer and its effects become stronger.

What you should do

Use this combination with caution. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how these medicines affect you. Avoid drinking alcohol, as this will make the sleepiness much worse. If you feel extremely sleepy or have trouble breathing, contact your doctor immediately.

Important precautions

Depression and anxiety disorders

Prozac can increase suicidal thoughts and the urge to self-harm, particularly when first starting the medicine or changing the dose. This risk is higher in children, teenagers, and young adults. Monitor your mood closely and seek immediate medical help if you experience new or worsening thoughts of hurting yourself.

Serotonin Syndrome

Prozac can cause a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome, especially if taken with other medicines that affect serotonin levels. Seek immediate medical help if you experience agitation, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, or severe muscle stiffness.

Drowsiness and coordination

Sedoxil causes significant drowsiness and affects your coordination. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. The effect is much stronger if you drink alcohol.

Severe Respiratory Insufficiency or Sleep Apnoea

Sedoxil is a benzodiazepine that can suppress breathing. It must be avoided if you have severe lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or sleep apnoea, as it may lead to dangerous respiratory failure.

Bleeding disorders

Prozac increases your risk of serious bleeding, especially if you are also taking aspirin, NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), or blood thinners (like warfarin). Seek medical advice if you notice unusual bruising or persistent bleeding.

Dependency and withdrawal

Sedoxil is a benzodiazepine that can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures.

Food and drink warnings

Alcohol

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking these medicines. Combining alcohol with Prozac or Sedoxil can significantly increase drowsiness, dizziness, and impair your coordination. It may also worsen the symptoms of your underlying condition.

Grapefruit juice

Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking Sedoxil. Grapefruit can interfere with how your body breaks down this medicine, leading to higher levels in your blood and increasing the risk of side effects like extreme sleepiness.

Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)

Prozac can sometimes increase the effects of caffeine in your body. This may lead to feeling jittery, anxious, or having difficulty sleeping. If you notice these effects, you should reduce your caffeine intake.
