Can I take Ashwagandha and Ramipril together?

Why this happens

Both substances lower blood pressure. Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor designed to relax blood vessels. Ashwagandha has natural sedative and blood-pressure-lowering properties.

When used together, their effects can add up (an additive effect), potentially making your blood pressure too low.

You may be experiencing an interaction between ashwagandha and ramipril if:

• You feel dizzy or lightheaded, especially when standing up.

• You experience low blood pressure symptoms, such as faintness or weakness.

• You notice headaches or fatigue.

• You have changes in heart rate, such as palpitations.

• You develop digestive symptoms, including nausea or stomach upset.

• Symptoms start after starting ashwagandha or increasing the dose while taking ramipril.

If you have any of the above symptoms, you should:

• Speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice as soon as possible.

• Do not stop taking ramipril suddenly unless advised by a healthcare professional.

• Avoid starting, stopping, or changing the dose of ashwagandha without medical advice.

• Seek urgent medical help if you faint or have severe dizziness.

Drinking alcohol while taking ramipril can cause your blood pressure to drop too low. This may make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when standing up. It is best to keep alcohol intake to a minimum, especially when you first start the medicine or if your dose is increased.

Salt substitutes (potassium-rich)

Ramipril can increase the levels of potassium in your blood. You should avoid using salt substitutes that contain potassium (such as Lo-Salt) because this can lead to dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalaemia).
